Sun Devils

I can't really complain about a trip to San Diego to play in the Holiday bowl. But I am going to, nonetheless.

I am hearing from multiple sources that the reason why ASU is not headed to the Fiesta Bowl is because of...you guessed it..$$$. The executives of the fiesta bowl, and the BCS dudes understand that Glendale will profit more from two visiting schools coming here, as opposed to one visiting school and 35,000 commuters from Phoenix who will not be staying in hotels or shopping at Westgate, spending money.

I am a business man and a realist and I understand the economics around this move.

BUT...

This is College Football ladies and gentlemen, this isn't the pros. There should be a difference between the shrewd nature in which the leagues monetize its players, coaches, and teams!

Kanye breaks down at concert in Paris

What a horrible time for the West family, and in particular Kanye West. Just one week after coping with the death of his mother, he is obligated to continue his tour. Yesterday, during a concert in Paris, Kanye broke down into tears when he started singing the song "Hey Mama." Reports say that Kanye announce to the crowd, "This one's for my mother..." and then he just "broke down." Kanye had to leave the stage, and he returned to sing "Stronger" 15 minutes later after being consoled by managers and friends.

Let's all remember that this man just lost the most important person in his life, and he still continues to work. Unbelievable.

New Music Monday

The two bands that we are going to look at this week are both out of the UK. Call it a European streak, but I definitely digging these two bands. Remember, last week I introduced you to Raised Fist, out of Sweden.

This week, check out

1. we.don't.know
2. Sumit

1. We don't know is a two man (perhaps boy) band out of London. There sound reminds me of something you would here at a really good party when the two kids who know how to play guitar bust out and start playing. Or maybe it just sounds good...the two dudes (lads) in the band are very harmonious, and they know how to sing together. The two guys, known by first names Dan and Josh blend various instruments and acoustic guitars for a happy sing-along punky sound. Think, the plain white tees acoustic stuff (hey delilah) mixed with a juvenile sound. Its not bad

2. The second band also comes out of the UK, but these guys are outta Manchester. Sumit's sound is alternative rock and Indie mixed with a genre known as shoegaze (yeah, I have never heard of it either). Shoegaze is a type of alternative rock with a heavy dull guitar sound. The name shoegazing came about because the artists in this genre used to play their instruments and stare at the ground...shoegazing. This band sound somewhat dull, but in a good way...Not to compare them to a great band like Pink Floyd, but they sort of have that MELLOW EASY GOING DAZE that I love. Anyway, check them out on myspace.

Donda's Death will Deter Kanye's Style

The recent and untimely death of rapper Kanye West's mother Donda will have an immediate impact on his style. While this may seem like an obvious statement, I believe that we are about to see a new kind of rapper with a completely different agenda. If you take a look at a Kanye West album, you will notice that his lyrics are both relevant and personal. When he was in a horrific car accident some time ago, he came out and rapped (on several tracks) about that event. Another example is when he was in the middle of controversy for saying some negative things about President Bush, again he used that as ammunition for his style.

Many rappers do this. But noone does it more than Kanye.

There are several rappers that rap about themselves, however, I have never heard a rapper that was so egotistical and self righteous. I believe that with the tragic death of his mother he will take a strong look at his lyrics and switch his style up.

Boss-ton

Much has been publicized about the recent demolition derby that the sports teams of Boston have been under. It seems like years of curses have all been traded in for wins, wins, and more wins. Lets take a closer look.

Celtics - (7-0) - The offseason trades to acquire KG, and Ray Allen, who, in my humble opinion are the fiercest and smoothest players in the game, respectively, have contributed to a Green Machine that doesn't look to be stopping anytime soon. They have established what most NBA teams dream about, an inside AND outside game + defense. If the Celts keep this up, they will join the Patriots and go undefeated.
Speaking of the Pats, they too are dominating their league at 9-0. Many believe, especially those in Boston, that they will run the table all the way to the Superbowl. I'd have to agree, the only remaining opponent that will get in their way is the NY Giants on the last game of the season. You better believe that Belichek (sp) and staff will go for it if it comes down to the last game of the season. Remember, if the Pats lock in the best record in the AFC, they have a bye the first week of the playoffs.
Oh, yeah, PLAYOFFS, the Red Sox just won their second championship in four years by sweeping the Rockies (what a story that was!), and the Sox looked poised to do it again next year.
And don't forget about the BC Eagles who were ranked as high as #2 this year in college football.
And not like anyone is paying attention but the Bruins are off to a fantastic start, and the New England soccer team just made it to the championships game.

So there you have it. The NBA, NFL, MLB, NCAA, NHL, and MLS are all being dominated by New England sports teams.

College football is cool

When you stop to think about college football and its organization you have to consider that it is truly awesome. I love the fact that over 150 teams have the opportunity to vie for the number 1 spot on top of the BCS. Of course, we all know that 80% of these teams don't have an icicle's chance in hell of reaching the summit, but that still leaves about 30 teams to duke it out.

Case and point: Kansas Jayhawks (10-0) (6-0 conf.) Who would have thought that at the start of the NCAA basketball season the folks in Lawrence would be going loony for their school's football team and not for the b-ball team. Nobody really gave Kansas a chance at the beginning of the year, and now they are on top of a Big 12 conference that houses some premier schools including Nebraska and Missouri.

Arizona State Sun Devils: (9-1) (6-1 conf.) C'mon, I gotta mention my boys! Every year the potential for the dudes in Tempe are sky high, however, most years they fail to make it past 7 wins and a trip to Hawaii (not a bad consolation prize, huh?). But this year they have maxed their star power and with the help of first year coach Dennis Erickson they are atop the LOADED Pac-10 and looking to play in their first Rose Bowl since Jake 'The Snake' Plummer was calling the shots. GO DEVILS!!!

Of course there are a few other schools that deserve honorable mention - how about Central Florida's reign earlier this season? There have been so many upsets this season, I cant wait to watch this Saturday!!

Hey Kansas fans! Want tickets to the Big Twelve Championship Game??

"New Music Monday"

What good is a blog if you don't learn anything, right? Starting today, every Monday you will be introduced to at least two new bands that you most likely have never heard of. These bands will represent a full spectrum of musical genres - from rock to rap and country to classical. I am going to educate you on who these bands are, why they are good enough to be mentioned in this blog, and finally, where you can go check them out. We're gonna see how this works out. I am probably gonna start with introducing two every week, however, if I start to see a great response from you I will step it up! I will know you are into this by your comments.

The first two bands we are going to take a look at are
1. Raised Fist
2. Two Gallants

Raised Fist
- This band comes screaming, literally, out of Sweden. Raised Fist consists of a five-some of Swedes that have been in the hardcore-punk rock scene since 1993. Their sound reminds me of nothing I have ever heard before - Its an onslaught of metal, speed, and screams. Usually, I get turned off from this type of reckless-hardcore-rock-till-you-drop-dead-from-an-aneurysm type of music, but man I 'm telling you these guys ROCK! I first heard them while listening to a punk compilation CD (Punk-o-Rama 8 or 9). I heard their single 'Get This Right', and I just sat there with my jaw-dropped in awe. But don't take my word for it, check them out your self.
Go to their MySpace page and drop them a line, their newest CD is called "Sound of the Republic" and I'm pretty sure you can buy it straight from the MySpace page.

The second band we're gonna take a look at comes of from a completely different school of rock. This band broke into the underground indie-rock scene in San Fransisco in '02. They started making waves because of there infusion between rural blues and indie rock. The band consists of lead singers Tyson Vogel and Adam Stephens. There sound is mellow, with a folky-old west style to it. The two singers have been making music together since the early 1990's when they were just twelve. They managed to release a few eps independently, and in 2004 released The Throes under Alive Records. Two Gallants, who often refer to themselves as 2GS, are currently on a European tour until mid-December.

Great Dane

Dane Cook has emerged as one of the greatest comedians of our time. Whether you like him, hate him, or just don't get him, there is no denying that he has made a huge impact on the American comedy scene. Some argue that he has saved comedy all together.
His outrageous story telling style makes him popular with younger crowds that crave crude humor and plenty of laughs.
If you've never seen Cook (crawl out from that rock you've been living under for the past five years) then watch this video

Cook is in the middle of a 25 city U.S. tour called Rough around the edges. For tickets in your area click here

Hannah Montana; A Superstar

I remember a few Saturday mornings where I would walk downstairs to grab some breakfast, and watch as my little sisters were GLUED to the television watching Hannah Montana. I didn't realize it then but I was witnessing a star in the making, well technically I was witnessing my sisters witness a star in the making...But nonetheless I know all this hype would eventually land this young girl in Superstarland.
I am not a fan of Hannah Montana, but its cool to see a legit role model emerge after the likes of Paris, Lindsay, Brittany, Hilary, Mary Kate-Ashley (why they never called them 'Mashley' is beyond me), Christina, and others fell off the squeaky-clean bandwagon they rode for so many years. So, hey, Go Hannah!

Well deserved honor for a legend

Last night I turned on the Suns game and watched as one of my hero's was being immortalized in the Phoenix Suns "Ring of Honor." The man being inducted was none other than Jerry Colangelo, majority owner of the Suns and original owner and CEO. While most everybody knows about Mr. Colangelo's amazing accomplishments in the Suns front office, not everyone knows what an important role he has played in the development of Phoenix itself. When Mr. Colangelo came to the valley of the sun in 1968, Phoenix was still thought of as the "Wild, Wild, West" Colangelo brought a sense of community to this city while instilling his values for family and honesty into the fabric of our lives.
Without getting too corny, let's just say that Phoenix would not be the great city it is today without Jerry Colangelo.

BTW, Suns win 103-92 against LeBron and the Cavs.
